Advanced Class A CDL Refresher Course

The Advanced Class A CDL Refresher Course is a great fit for drivers who are preparing to take the CDL written test and skills test. This 120 to 160 hours course has three components: classroom instruction, skill development in our tractor-trailer training yard, and practice out in the field.

• Classroom topics will include:
  • CDL general knowledge
  • CDL combination vehicles
  • Air brake systems and operation
  • Hours of service rules for logbooks and eLogs
  • NJ Safe Driver Course
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Forklift Certification
• Yard skills will include:
  • Correct pre-trip and post-trip procedures
  • How to perform in-cab inspection
  • How to shift and turn safely
  • How to back into a spot at a 90-degree turn
  • How to perform an offset back and straight line back maneuver
  • How to parallel park to the left (sight side) and right (blind side)
  • How to properly conduct an air brake test
• Road skills will include:
  • Practice driving on city roads, highways, and rural roads
  • How to shift an asynchronous transmission
  • How to correctly use a double-clutch
  • How to safely turn wide
  • Defensive driving

Students in this course will have the opportunity to take the written CDL knowledge test at a New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) facility. Their coursework will prepare them with the skills needed to take the CDL skills test. Additional information on the CDL application process and licensing requirements is available from the NJ MVC. Students who have passed the CDL test will be issued a Class A CDL and a certificate.

This training program runs Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students may take weekend classes on Saturdays and Sundays if their schedule does not permit weekday classes. To be eligible for course completion, students must have an attendance rate of 80% or higher.

Forklift Operator Certification

The Advanced Class A CDL Refresher Course also includes a component for students to receive OSHA certification for forklift operation. OSHA standards require that only appropriately trained and certified employees can operate a powered industrial truck (commonly known as a forklift) in the workplace. This training component will cover topics including:

• Proper forklift inspection and maintenance
• Safety protocols for forklift operation
• Understanding forklift capacity
• Managing the workplace environment, including visibility and surface conditions
• Steering and stability

After successfully completing this course, students will receive an OSHA-approved pocket card certifying their training and evaluation dates.
