What to Expect on the New Jersey MVC Road Test
The New Jersey MVC road test evaluates your ability to safely operate a vehicle in real traffic conditions. Understanding what’s on the test helps you prepare effectively.
Skills Tested During the Road Exam
The MVC examiner will evaluate your performance on:
- Vehicle control — Smooth acceleration, braking, and steering
- Parallel parking — Must complete within a single attempt
- K-turn (3-point turn) — Reversing direction on a narrow street
- Backing up — Straight-line backing while looking over your shoulder
- Stopping — Complete stops at stop signs and red lights
- Turns — Proper signaling, lane positioning, and speed
- Intersections — Yielding, right-of-way, and safe gap selection
- Lane changes — Mirror checks, blind spot checks, signaling
- Observation — Scanning for hazards, checking mirrors regularly
- Speed management — Maintaining appropriate speed for conditions
- Following distance — Safe spacing behind other vehicles
Before the Road Test Begins
Before you start driving, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate knowledge of your vehicle’s controls:
- Turn signals (left and right)
- Headlights (low and high beams)
- Windshield wipers
- Hazard lights (emergency flashers)
- Horn
- Defroster
- Emergency/parking brake
If you’re using our vehicle, we’ll make sure you know where all controls are located before test day.
Automatic Failure Items
Certain actions result in automatic failure of the road test:
- Dangerous action requiring examiner intervention
- Disobeying traffic signals or signs
- Involvement in a collision (regardless of fault)
- Driving on the wrong side of the road
- Exceeding the speed limit
- Failure to yield to pedestrians
- Inability to complete a required maneuver
Our practice session specifically focuses on avoiding these critical errors.

How to Parallel Park — Tips to Pass the NJ Road Test
Parallel parking is the maneuver that causes the most anxiety for road test candidates — and the skill where most students make mistakes. At Mike’s Driving School, we break parallel parking into simple, repeatable steps that work every time.
NJ Road Test Parallel Parking Requirements
- You must park within a 25-foot space (using cones, not actual cars)
- Your vehicle must be within 6 inches of the curb
- You must complete the maneuver without hitting any cones
- You may only pull forward once to adjust
- Excessive pull-ups or hitting cones results in failure of this portion
Step-by-Step Parallel Parking Technique
- Position your vehicle — Pull up parallel to the front cone/car, about 2 feet away, with your rear bumper aligned with the front cone
- Check mirrors and blind spots — Look around before backing
- Begin backing — Turn steering wheel sharply toward the curb while slowly reversing
- Watch your reference points — When your front door handle aligns with the front cone, straighten the wheel
- Continue backing straight — Watch the rear cone in your mirror
- Turn wheel away from curb — As your front bumper clears the front cone, turn sharply away from the curb
- Straighten and stop — Center yourself in the space, straighten wheels
- Adjust if needed — You may pull forward once to center or get closer to curb
Common Parallel Parking Mistakes
- Starting too far from the curb — Stay within 2 feet when positioning
- Turning too early — Wait until properly aligned before turning
- Turning too late — You’ll end up too far from the curb
- Backing too fast — Go slowly for better control
- Forgetting to check mirrors — Examiners watch for this
- Panicking — Stay calm, it’s a learnable skill
During your practice session, we’ll have you parallel park repeatedly until the technique becomes automatic.
How to Do a K-Turn — 3-Point Turn Tips for the NJ Road Test
The K-turn (also called a 3-point turn or broken U-turn) is a required maneuver on the New Jersey road test. You’ll need to reverse your vehicle’s direction on a narrow street without using a driveway or intersection.
Step-by-Step K-Turn Technique
- Check traffic — Look both directions and check mirrors before starting
- Signal right — Indicate you’re pulling to the right side of the road
- Stop near the curb — Position on the right side of the road
- Check traffic again — Look both ways before proceeding
- Signal left — Turn on left signal
- Turn wheel hard left — While slowly moving forward
- Stop before the curb — Don’t hit the opposite curb
- Shift to reverse — Check traffic and mirrors
- Turn wheel hard right — While slowly backing
- Stop before the curb — Don’t hit the curb behind you
- Shift to drive — Check traffic
- Proceed in new direction — Straighten wheel and accelerate normally
K-Turn Tips for Success
- Go slowly — Speed is not being tested; control is
- Check traffic every time — Before each movement, look both ways
- Use the full street width — Get close to curbs without hitting them
- Don’t rush — Taking your time is safer than rushing
- Hand-over-hand steering — Turn the wheel fully and quickly
- Stay calm if you need extra points — A 5-point turn isn’t ideal but won’t fail you automatically
Common K-Turn Mistakes
- Not checking traffic — Must look before each movement
- Hitting the curb — Points deducted for curb contact
- Forgetting to signal — Signal at the start of the maneuver
- Rolling backward in drive — Use brake properly when switching gears
- Looking only at the steering wheel — Keep eyes on the road and mirrors

I enrolled both of my children in Mike's driving school—my middle daughter five years ago and my 16-year-old son recently. My son was fortunate to have Mr. Walt as his instructor. Mr. Walt helped him feel more at ease, and by the end of his lessons, my son was very confident in his driving skills. I want to express my gratitude to Mike's driving school and Mr. Walt for helping to create two confident drivers on the road.Posted on Google![]()
